Positivity Pack

The gift of a smile is more impactful than most people realize. Thoughts -- both positive and negative -- have neurochemical charges which can impact people momentarily or for a lifetime! And according to psychologists, the act of smiling benefits your health and happiness.

It's been noted, for example, that people who consciously practice gratitude are happier because they experience a surge of rewarding neurotransmitters, like dopamine, endorphins and serotonin. It's also been said that if you're always thinking negative thoughts, you are bombarding your cells with "negative peptides" which will ultimately lesson the number of positive peptides in your cells.

Found throughout the body, including the brain and immune system, a peptide is made up of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. Neuropeptides are the means by which all cells in the body communicate with one another. There are more than 100 distinct neuropeptides in the nervous system which can influence a range of body operations from gene expression to the building of new synapses

There's good news though! Every cell in your body is replaced every month or so, meaning there's an opportunity to reprogram your "negative peptides" with positive ones. Scientists even believe that a person's genetic make-up is determined by thoughts, feelings, attitudes and perceptions.

I'm trying to make a dent in mental health, and to help as much people as I can.

You'd be surprised by how many people who suffer from mental health issues. I feel like there needs to be more acceptance and compassion around this issue, especially for teens and (young) adults in the workplace who are subjected to bullying or intense pressure.

I started "Positivity Pack" as an easy way for people to help a friend in need. The idea is to send an anonymous (or not) Positivity Pack and change someone's day. It's impossible to not be happy when you get a package of happiness to your front door, it's spreading smiles!

Positivity Pack is the perfect chil-out kit after those horrible, rainy, hair-pulling and frustrating days.  Inside there are items such as bubble-wrap, a notebook & pencil, smiley stickers, sweets, a happy music playlist, confetti, a de-stress guide, some tea bags, and balloons.

From what I understand, there isn't a startup doing anything similar to this and it's deeply needed. According the the World Health Organization, the consequences from stress can be costly. Work-related stress is one of the most challenging issues, and a growing concern worldwide.

The National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) conducted by the Health Ministry last year revealed that the incidence of mental health problems was higher among younger adults — those in the 16-19 age group accounted for 34.7 per cent and those in the 20-24 age group accounted for 32.1 per cent.

I've seen the custom messages people put with the packs, and I can tell I'm making a difference. From people who were just stressed at work, to people who have mental health issues, I like to think my pack affects their day or hopefully week in a positive way! I'm growing the user base mainly by social media, and word of mouth.

Advice for my peers

DON'T BE AFRAID TO FAIL:  I've had a few business' before this, most failed, and I've had one or two success'. If you truly have a hunger and the right mind set to succeed, nothing stands in your way except yourself! Eliminate your doubts and do something your passionate about.

USE SOCIAL MEDIA:  Social media helps me connect to real people that love to see a young person trying to make a difference.

GET MAINSTREAM PRESS TO COVER YOUR PROJECT: Everyone knows someone. A lot of people from Twitter have helped a lot, they'd connect me with a friend from a certain newspaper/radio/website, etc, and that would happen a lot and help. I also used my previous connections from being on the Digital Youth Council for Ireland, and my previous startup, Skizzie.

LinkedIn and emailing people from different places for press also helped a lot. I'd also post tweets/linkedin status' and people would respond to those.

I did the above, and people notice I was passionate about my startup and wanted to help out as much as they could. Then I started to get a lot of emails and calls, and after a week or so I had my first interview. Silicon Republic was the first major publication to cover me, and got over 300 shares on it! I was also featured on PSFK.
